Hi, I am Marcelle Durost teaching principal here at Southport Central School. I am very fortunate to work with a supportive school community, School Board, talented staff members, outstanding students, and wonderfully involved parents. This school is unique in many ways. The multiage classes allow teachers to provide different learning opportunities for our students at different age levels. Students benefit for they work at a pace that supports their learning.
We have planned opportunities for our student body to work together. Wednesdays have been set aside for developing integrated learning opportunities. Our students are paired up (older with a younger) to complete different learning tasks. The older students teach/coach their buddy to help complete learning challenges. We also provide our students group challenges, where they all must work together in order for the group to succeed. This is an opportunity that is hard to duplicate in a large school due to the sheer numbers of students. This helps build a supportive learning community and teachers our students how to work together as a team as well as celebrate individual differences.
Our students have many opportunities to be physically active at school through physical education classes, swim lessons, yoga classes, winter skating and sledding, After School Trail Club and Jump and Juggle (Grs.3-6) and trips to the beach. With the support of SIA, Southport Island Association, who has purchased Huk Skis (a ski that is a cross between a cross country ski and snow shoe) our students in grades 4-6 will learn to outdoor ski. We are in hopes to use them on our Nature Trail and at recess time, weather permitting! Please let it snow!!!!
If you have any questions about our school or programs, please feel free to call and talk to me, Eileen Higgins the Administrative Assistant and Technology Specialist or any staff member!
